That America is one of the most overweight countries in the world today is no more a secret. Since several years our overweight issue has been a hot subject in the media and the news as the new trendy diets and weight loss programs have been rendered ineffective. There are number of methods for weight loss. Some of these are based on changing the diet while the other methods include surgery and medication. It is scary to see medication and surgery being used for reduction of weight. With these methods one can lose the weight at a fast rate, but they are also very risky and have much more side effects and dangers compared to dieting and exercise programs.

The surgeries that are most commonly performed for weight reduction are liposuctions and gastric bypass; both are inherently risky. Of the two, though liposuction is safer weight loss surgery, it is very expensive and can leave vicious scar on the body. On the other hand gastric bypasses are more drastic, and can lead to serious tissue damage, medical conditions and nutrient deficiencies. Thus one can conclude that with surgery one can shed off the extra weight faster, but it is expensive and a number of dangers are involved with it. Hence it should be reserved for only people who suffer from obesity that is causing serious and immediate adverse health effects.

Compared to the surgery, medication is less drastic, still a number of dangers are linked with it. You may be seeing and listening a number of drugs or ‘herbs’ being advertised. These suppress your appetite and have potential harmful effects and as such they should not be taken without doctor’s advice. Seeing the advertisement you may get tempted to using them to loose the weight faster, however they are not suitable for most of the people and as with surgery, medications too should be reserved for serious forms of obesity.

In fact the best weight loss methods are the traditional methods of diet and exercise. Fortunately our understanding of both diet and exercise is improving and people are getting more attracted towards them. At the same time one should remember that starving yourself is not the answer.

The latest studies show that the best weight loss diets are the ones that encourage you to eat more, but eat healthy food. To maintain the high metabolism one should eat the foods that are high in fiber, vegetables, lean protein, and the ones that are low in fat. If you are hungry, eat! Starving will only reduce your metabolism and make you weak, so eat as much as you like, but eat healthy food.
